This scorecard shows the differences between jurisdictions and identifies the gaps in animal welfare regulation at abattoirs, poultry processors and knackeries across Australia.
The scorecard is based on a detailed report which documents the differences in how Australian slaughtering establishments are regulated by state, territory and federal governments, and what this means for the welfare of animals being handled and slaughtered at these facilities.
How to read this scorecard?
We’ve developed a nominal scoring system based on seven key measures: Animal welfare requirements, Audit frequency, Auditor training, Oversight, CCTV use, Company training, and Transparency. The scorecard covers three types of establishments: abattoirs, knackeries and poultry processors.
To access each scorecard, first select the type of establishment in the top left-hand corner of the map. The number shown on the map for each state or territory is the average score of the seven key measures for that location. This gives you an idea of the overall level of regulation for animal welfare in that jurisdiction. From here, you can click on any individual state or territory to get more information. In the bottom left corner of the map, you can select any of the key measures to see how each jurisdiction compares to one another.
